  • Sewing Project

The Widow's Project, which links American donors with widows and their children, now plans to open a training center for sewing for 40-60 families in Jalalabad. Working together with a non-profit Afghan organization, In the Name of God, they plan to rent a nine-room house where women can learn to sew and embroider, or come to work on orders, such as sewing uniforms for the military. The group will work on marketing as well as training.

The objective is to help Afghan widows and less advantaged women establish their life and become self-sufficient. Women will be enrolled in vocational classes such as sewing, office management, literacy programs and social hygiene. Students will join three-month estensive classes, and will graduate with a certificate. Students will receive orders to work on, which will be a good source of not only income, but also incentive and encouragement.

The cost to run the Sewing Project are modest. The rent is $250 a month. The group's goal is to establish the first center in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, with additional centers planned for Kabul. The estimated annual cost is $20,000.

AWAI and In the Name of God will jointly run this project and will take care of its expenses. The first training center in Jalalabad is a pilot project. The project will eventually be launch nationwide.

    Managing the project will be:
    Rona Popal, AWAI executive director
    Shahla Arsala, Widow Project Coordinator
    Rahima Haya AWAI
Nima Sadati, In the Name of God
