  • Solar Cooking Project

There is a dire shortage of fuel for cooking in Afghanistan and where refugees are in Pakistan. Either fuel is too expensive or not available. Harnessing the free energy of the sun enables families to increase the amount of food they can cook and water than can pasteurize. And collecting wood is dangerous because of the prevalence of land mines in much of Afghanistan.

Laila H. Petty, a AWAI Board Director, is now in Kabul working to establish the Solar Cooking Project. She is working with Afghans in Kabul to organize the supplies necessary to make the solar cooking kits, called CooKits, and cooking Afghani food to ensure that the CooKits work properly. The next step will be to teach Afghans to make the CooKits, how to cook food with them, and conducting followup visits to address any questions about how to ensure successful cooking experiences.

Manufacturers of materials necessary to make the kits are being asked to donate supplies, but donations are still needed to set up and run the initial training workshops and to provide food for the workshops. Additional funds may be necessary to purchase sufficient supplies for everyone.
